Many "free" QR services instead encode a short redirect URL that they control, and later disable it or put it behind a subscription. A static code works as long as the content it points to exists.

Yes — QR codes themselves are free to use (the patents were never enforced; "QR Code" is a trademark of Denso Wave, but using the codes is unrestricted). Codes you generate here are yours, for print, packaging, menus, business cards, or anything else.

M (medium, ~15% recoverable damage) is the best default. Use L for very long content to keep the pattern coarse, and Q or H when the code will be printed small, laminated, or partially covered — for example by a logo. Higher correction makes the pattern denser.

It encodes your network name, encryption type and password in a standard format (WIFI:T:WPA;S:name;P:password;;). Both iOS and Android cameras recognize it and offer to join the network — no typing. Note that anyone who scans the code can read the password, so display it only where guests are welcome.

Up to 4,296 alphanumeric or about 2,950 binary characters at the lowest error correction level — but practical codes should stay far below that. The more data, the denser and harder to scan the pattern. For long content, encode a short URL that points to it instead.
